Re: New build coming...Rover

Tomorrow the next step is to put the engine into the frame and see if the front engine sprocket location is also problematic . Maybe they should just say this frame is for early models only.  69-75.

I wish they had told me if that is the case. I did not want to buy all new sprockets.
And offset expensive sprockets.

You need to use the cush drive that matches your engine. Looks like a little cutting, and grinding in your future.

So you meant the cush drive has to match the engine so the sprockets will line up?

Yes. The 77-78 has the sprocket set 3/8 inch further out, so you need to use the cush drive from a 77-78, or from a DOHC.

That "tail" of tube sticking down past the joint is capped off and that makes the tube stronger.
It is a good design I think. Looks clean from above and the bottom is hardly visible.

Tools is right on the cush drive. If the engine is centered in the frame and the rear wheel is centered in the frame then the cush drives have to match. I can attest that 1/8'' offset is allowable, though!lol

I like how that drop tube hangs down,I think it gives the frame a little personality. And now that I think about it,since it came from Cycle 1, I'm sure it will all fit like it should.

Today I found out the engine mount bolts will not fit in the frame front lower mounts.
The holes are too small for the Honda bolts.
Another problem that will need to be corrected.

Here are photos of the engine in the frame.
The engine fit in the frame easily.
I will have to re drill the front lower mount holes after all of the rear drive problems are solved.

I will have to use the early model cush drive /sprocket  carrier hub because the studs on the 78 hub hit the frame when the rear wheel is lined up. sprocket still needs to go to the left.

The sprockets are still not lined up.
Right now with the 78 front sprocket and engine the rear sprocket is still too far to the right but the wheel and hub cannot be moved to the left because the sprocket studs are hitting the frame.

Dent the frame? Hmmmm
Cut and reweld????

Can you grind the frame down along a line like I have put in black? Am not sure if that would end up going through the entire wall of the tube or not

Good thinking Hellbilly429!!

That was just what I was going to post.
Of course the top AND bottom will have to be done the same, and welded.

If I bought the early style sprocket/hub piece, then the sprocket would be 10mm (3/8)
inch even further to the right, and the wheel could not be centered in the frame when the chain is lined up.

The hub and engine must be the same year.

Lol, once in a while I have a good idea that actually works! Now when you say it has to be welded, do you mean to fill in the hollow section that will be left where you cut?

The solution works.
Just need to weld in and finish then i can make spacers.
The wheel is aligned, the chain is aligned and i have the space needed between frame and hub.

Sure wish i had a lathe to trim those spacers.

Yes exactly . That filling in of the tube end is necessary to maintain the strength of the tube.
Also closing the tube completely stops the oxygen and the corrosion potential.

Glad it worked out easy enough for you. That tube is under compression. There is so much beef there that if you even left it unwelded it would never give any problem. Just plug the hole and you'll be right on!

Oh,I hear ya on the small diameter engine mount bolts. My chopper is the same way, uses 3/8'' all thread. Obviously it held up OK,but i drilled it out and put in bolts that actually fit the engine. No slop.  I dont know why people do them like that, aint no thing but a chicken wing I suppose.

Yeah, my birthday is 4/29.

Lucky, glad you didn't have to weld too much, would say that notch isn't going to be noticable. Also, I think Shinyribs has been trying to get your attention at the top of the forum
