trying to remove the forks, to clean and paint them, I am wondering If I just need to undo the clams up top and they will slip off, the manual seems very vague, and a search on here really didn't help either, or do I need to remover the large bolt on top of each fork?
I just want some advice before I force them out. and I would rather not mess with the bearings, they seem fine and I don't want to open that can of worms.

Should just be a matter of loosening the clamps in the triple tree.  There should be two clamps, upper and lower, on each tube.  When I installed my Progressive springs, that's all I had to do, was loosen the clamps, and the fork tubes slid right out.

The bolts on top hold the springs inside the tubes.  Only need to take them out if you are changing the fluid, or replacing the springs, or seals.  Cheers!

Use a screw driver to pry the clamps open a little. They will fall right out.

YO Daddy"O" speaking of elevation how high have you taken your bike before it started gasping for air,(what was the route you took with previous owner?)
with 4 carbs there has to be a trick to get it more air ,I know on Wolf Pass my Heritage took a few minutes for the computer to try and get it right ,(15 mph turns at 35)only seemed "right" at top when leveled out,(junk modular)
On older H.D. you put a bigg clover washer on air and turn it open once in a while just had to close on way back down.???

Piute Divide, CO is as high as I taken it and the Elevation is 9,165 ft.  I could tell it was down on power a little but had no problem passing in the 65mph zone.  Here is a pic of the route we took.

I got the forks loose but they won't budge down at all, they spin free but won't pull out. and the gators are not uncliping from the headlight ears either. they should just pop right down right? Uggg. The friggin manual is no help at all here.

Remove the gators from the sliders. The forks will slide out. Then, you can remove the headlight ears from the triple trees. To remove the gators from the headlight ears, you need to remove the chrome ring that holds them on first.
