That is incredibly helpful! Thank you! I do recall my slow jet is also a 32.5. The ".5" surprised me,so that stuck in my memory. IIRC, .y main is a 105 and my air bleed is a 75. Not sure what my needle is, but I know it's non-adjustable. Thanks so much for this info. That's a HUGE step in the right direction.
hmm I guess this is the funky part you were looking for..these carbs from 86-88 all look the same except the innards!some were cali.restricted of course,u.k.-drag strip version lol,and u.s.version.the 750 had two fuel inlets 1100 had one.im guessing yours has a 5d29 or maybe a 5dl11. needle..i like to keep the original needles or possibly f.p.I don't like spending money and the originals work fine.shimmed of course...d.j. needles oval the emulsion tubes in no time...you mentioned 105 jets but ive never seen them in these carbs, nor 75s.idk..in any case you have far greater knowledge than I .I don't want to sound like a know it all.i want you to be as excited as I get over these carbs!hahha...I really hope they work out good and your bike looks awesome by the way...I get mine mostly at the salvage yard because its close and I know the guy so sometime have to get creative.its heaven on earth.lol.
No way man, you definitely have more knowledge than me on this topic. This is all uncharted territory for me. You mentioned the will oval the emul. tubes. Will they bend them? Or just friction?
These are off an ''early 1100'', and are 34 mm, but that's all I know. I haven't checked for numbers, and I don't know the exact year model of the original bike.
Thanks again for the insight. Definitely good info for me to reference back to when I get the chance to tackle these things. And yes, I am excited!
Thanks to Truck I had a bit of motivation today. And thanks to Tools I had this nice mockup head to play with in the warm confines of my house.
The hose was $14 at Advance Auto. The hose clamps were $9 for a pack of 10 at Lowe's. The clamps at auto parts stores are junk and way overpriced. The one's they sell at Lowe's are for oil creek pipe, so they will take more torque than this piece of radiator hose will ever need. And they're stainless.
Nothing much to say really. Just eyeball things and cut the hose about 1/4-3/8 of an inch longer than looked necessary. Laid a yard stick across the ends once I slipped them on the head and marked to have one continuous line across all 4 "boots".
Three things:
1- This particular hose has three bends total before you start cutting. If you don't mess up (like me) each of those bends are good for two ''boots''.
2- If you tighten the clamps on the head it deforms the hoses pretty bad and the carbs do NOT wanna go on. So just clamp 'er down after everything is in place.
3- Watch where your clamps end up. Hard to put the screws in the ''stock'' locations, but very easy to interfere with some of the carb linkages. Not really a big deal, just keep an eye out.
Initial comparison. Nothing lines up or is the right diameter.
Each pair of carbs is actually a perfect match on spacing. 1&2 and 3&4 on the head and the carbs match each other, but the gap between 2&3 is much wider at the head. Split the rack, make a new frame and widen it? hmmm...
Shows how bad the hose will deform with the clamps fully tightened at the head.
Very solid once altogether. I picked up a piece of 1 1/4'' pvc to slip inside the boots, but due to the weird angle of everything, it seems pointless to me. You could definitely cut a piece and slip it in there, but making it contour to the angles present is gonna require some heating and bending. IMO, straight sections of pvc pipe jabbed in the boots will create just as much airflow-funkiness as nothing at all. Strictly conjecture, so get your grain of salt out.
-Start to finish figuring and cutting hoses- 15 minutes
-Start to finish mounting carbs to a head not connected to a bike and chasing it all over my bedroom floor- uh...too long. do it on the bike.
-Total cost- $23 for pipe and clamps. $100 for the carbs to my door. Probably overpaid, but had guaranteed healthy diaphragms ( $$$) and slides.
Tired of the wet butt water squish, and with my rush of motivation, I decided to try my hand at my seat cover that has been laying around.
The old gal definitely need it.
This was much easier and went much faster than I had anticipated. Probably took 30 minutes to get all the staples wedged out, but it seemed like half that long putting it back on! A few minutes touching up here and there with the heat gun and I was happy with my results.
Still not overly happy with the rather shiny material on this cover, but it feels like it's made out of fairly sturdy stuff.
Not happy with these either. Was it really cheaper to chrome these ,rather than just use stainless? Not sure what I'll do about these just yet. I may leave the strap off anyway. Who knows.
Mounted them on the bike and checked out the throttle cable situation. It needs attention. I'll update that later. Bike starts better with the enrichment circuit than it ever did what an accel pump & choke plates! THAT surprised me. Once installed I open the petcock and waited several moments to check for leaks. Flipped the key, pull the enrichment knob, thumb the button....crank,cran...vroom.. Well, that was quick! Revs angry, too. Can't wait to see what the road manners are like.
Petcock clears fine. Way easier to hook up the fuel line now, too. Stock location has you crammed right up against the tank.
Saw one post somewhere (can't remember) where someone mentioned clearance to the fuel tank. Not sure how you would ever have that issue.

You got good eyes buddy! That's that old Ironhead I need to part out.
Truck, that is them. Not road tested yet,so I can't say much. I did learn that 750 carbs have dual fuel inlets whereas the 1,000 carbs have only one. These are 1k carbs , single fuel inlet and 34mm. But that's all I know for now. More to come soon I hope.
Oh, and I found someone that mounted these carbs using stock Honda boots, but it was unclear if they used stock DOHC boots or F2 boots. Need to look at that again.
And was reminded how well these brakes work. Sure, they aren't the 6 pots or blue bots or Brembo's you hear about usually, but they are smooth and strong.
And some shameless pics cos I haven't had her outta the barn in a few months.
Carbs felt ok, nothing impressive. I saw that all 4 needles were grooved when I was cleaning them so surprise, surprise it's dribbling everywhere. Which creates an erratic idle and an occasional off-idle stutterpopfart. But in reality, the transition for idle the WOT was always smooth. Seem very responsive, snappy under normal riding conditions ( most important factor- happy). WOT is still lacking, but with this 110 main it was kinda expected. I'll ordered some needles & seats, up the mains and actually synch them before I sat too much. TBH, Im not sure Im even getting WOT with the throttle as it is. More to come, but initial results seem promising.
Oh, and this was with no pods or filters or anything. need some of those, too.
Weren't no way around it. Just had to shorten the stock cable. Turned up a little piece of brass and drilled it for the cable to fit snugly in. The tip end of the cable end I drilled a little larger so I could splay the cable out before soldering. Should make for a strong mechanical connection. not just relying on the strength of the solder.
Dressed it up a bit with a file and it fit well.
The flat slides in the things are so weird.
And they ride in a plastic insert. Keeps them from rattling? Or maybe just a wear item that is replaceable?
Needles are interesting, too. They have a plastic washer that goes on the back side of the needle so the whole assembly is spring-loaded in to place with the slide return spring. Cool.
And size reference pics for anyone interested.
Still working on positively identifying these so I can order new needles and seats. Stay tuned...the weather is breaking!
Katana carbs are basically the same. Anything labeled Katana usually goes for less than GSXR. Some slight differences inside, but they are the same bodies.88-93 AS FAR AS I KNOW.
Something to consider. $ slide diaphragms will run about $20/each and kits ( float valve & seat/o-ring and bowl gasket x4 ) run about $70. So that's $150 right there. If you can buy a 100% usable rack for $200 it's probably a fair deal.
I don't feel like I overpaid as much now. All the old threads I ran across people mentioned buying racks of ebay carbs for $40-$50....hmmm....not sure I believe it now.
hey shinyribs, your progress looks great..from the picts it looks as though you have the oem needles..i don't know how to do p.m. or whatever you do but if your interested I have a factory pro jet kit.it came with two sets of needles and jets.your welcome to have them...you and a few of the others have helped me big time...let me know what to do and there yours...btw that looks like you got a good rack..everything on these carbs are a bit pricey! theres tricks to replacing just the diaphragms on these too..the f.p. kit turned mine into a monster..
Good to see you back,Hambone! Thanks for the offer! If you ever want to PM somebody click on their username. It will take you to a page where you can send an email. Each users email is hidden there, but your "PM" will just send to whatever email they signed up with.
Still shopping around for a deal on needles & seats...sooo tiny, yet sooo expensive. lol. Really hoping to gt this sorted out and on the road soon. Thanks again for everything.
Oh, and apparently the 5DL11 needles ( non-adjustable) I have are Katana items. Who knows...
thanks,i usually don't go far .four girls grandkids and just as many projects keep me spinning!i looked for needles and seats and only have three of each and they are used...two have the screen one doesn't.im sure I tossed the others so they wouldn't be re-used..new is probably the best but hurts to spend .I get it..this extra set of needles and jets I have would work well w your set up and engine mods im sure ...and it does make a world of difference.slight twist brings you to redline..pretty crappy here in new England but had to test the bike to make sure I was still alive!!anyway offer stands whenever..same for the seats etc...I acquired another 80 750f that will be refurbished to oem specs..so im not going too far ....I used a 76 cb550 throttle cable for my setup..but yours looked awesome..sorry for such a long post.
