Oh shit, i've gotta get in on this then! What've we gotta do? Find you a petcock?
Turbos, Hondas, 4-bangers, what could go wrong?

What year was the alternate tank from? Can you hook a hose up to it so there is no petcock?

Use a banjo fitting in lieu of a petcock. You won't know when you're empty until, well, you're empty but it'll at least get you running.

BACK OFF CDAISCOOL!!!! I don't play!
Solution: $6 Done Now hand over the curtain No,seriously though. What model tank do you have? I'm sure we can find somethig
|
|
My bike is an 81 and the new tank is, from what me and the salvage guy concluded, a 79-80 model tank. He said that the tanks are indeed identical except for the threaded bung for the petcock. My petcock nut I.D measures out on the caliper at .670" (~17mm) and the bungs threads O.D measures .615" (~15.62mm) and I.D of the threads measures at .570" (~14.48mm). Dime city sells a OEM replacement petcock for 16mm bungs, but Im not 100% that mine is 16mm. The measurements are pretty close, but I dont want to spend $60 unless I know for sure. Thats why I was kinda hoping somebody had one lying around?
Heres my original petcock, the one I need will look just like this but the threads on the nut will be a smaller diameter

I had considered just running a barbed fitting and a lawnmower petcock that I have, but I dont know if I can find metric pipe fittings? I may check ace hardware they usually have an awesome selection of odd ball stuff

Metric wrenches make good measuring devices for us guys with inches on our tape measures. Put the open end of a 16mm wrench on it and see if it fits
|
|
13mm ..........still a 1/2 "
+13mm +1/2"
= 1 inch = 1"
weres my 10mm

Shiny, when you attached the brass fittings did you just use regular teflon tape to seal it? I went to home depot and picked up a few fittings that Im going to try to rig up. I bought a 3/8" pipe cap and drilled the top of it to accommodate a male elbow thats fitted with a barb end. The cap fits my bung pretty good but I want to seal it somehow to be 100%. Maybe I can stick a small o ring in it and teflon tape the threads? I considered using jb weld, but decided against that immediately because Im sure at some point Id want to remove this contraption. I jb welded all the fittings just to be safe and know at least that theyre sealed....this is what I have so far
Hopefully if I can get it sealed around the bung on the tank Ill be set! Its not the prettiest thing but for now I think it will work and now i can ride!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Now if this daggum jb weld would cure a little faster I could test it out....keep yalls fingers crossed!

I used ARP thread sealer. It's basically just teflon paste. I have used the tape several times on gasoline with no issues. If you are really worried about it Permatex makes a sealant they call Non-hardening #2. Any auto parts place should have it. Gas doesn't hurt it a bit.
Just remember you ain't got no reserve now! Pushing sucks!

hey shiny, is this the stuff?

Yep. That's the stuff

well now on to the next problem.....I got my make shift fittings mounted to the tank and put gas in it. Started it up, no leaks...I let it warm up and went in to grab my helmet to take it around the block. Came back outside and there was gas everywhere and pouring out constantly! I checked all my fittings and no leaks there but the gas was coming out of the nipple on the very bottom of the carb on the left side?? Anyone know what this is?

Your float is stuck. Try tapping on the float bowel with the handle of a screw driver. It might dislodge the float, and needle.

Fixed it! I removed the drain screw on the side, it was slightly rusty on the end of the needle so I wiped it down really good and replaced it, leaking stopped. And I RODE!!!!!!! Wooo hoooo!! I have to say....I FREAKING LOVE THIS BIKE! I still dont have a seat on it or the back loop welded but sitting on the bare frame was semi-comfortable and damn did it feel good sitting inwards on the bike, it felt racy as hell! Im definitely considering a very low profile seat...and maybe some clubmans??? hahaha
|
|
Aweosme dude, funny that we both got to finally ride our bikes around the same time. if you don't plan on having a passenger on the bike you could always just slap a bobber seat on it without springs so it'll sit low and keep that real-short look you got going on now, not to mention might be a cheaper option

I love my bike too. I know exactly how you feel. Glad you got to ride. Ive ridden on frame rails too LOL sometimes you just cant wait any longer! I love my clubmans, wouldn't ever consider changing them, but your bike has a more modern look than mine. I would lean towards clip ons on your ride.

|
hmmmmm hadnt considered clip ons? I love the feel of leaning over this bike, definitely makes it feel faster! hahaha i love it!
