Here is my new almost perfect CB750. I set out to get my first project bike. I planned on building my first Cafe Racer. I have rebuilt a few cars in my life and I like mods vs stock. So I came across this bike and it was in the budget. Now comes the dilemma. For every person out there that wants to sell me parts to build the Cafe racer there is another person preaching to leave it alone.
I have owned this bike for two weeks. I have driven it everyday to work 45 miles round trip with no problems. I love it! But. I really want to take it apart!!

Boy is that bike clean! But hey man, it's your bike, you and only you have to live with it (unless you sell it) so do with it what you will, just make sure to make something awesome out of it!

Welcome to the forum Billman. I can understand your dilema,but Hillbilly is right. True,they aren't making anymore of these bikes,but since you have a mechanically sound,dependable bike to start with that would save you alot of time,money and grief building what you want. It's always a tough call whether to cut into a nice looking survivor,but in the end it's all up to you. I'll cut anything if it comes right down to it.
You could always make non-permanent mods to the bike that you could reverse back to stock,if that fits into your plans. Either way,it's a beautiful bike if you decide to leave it as-is,but if you decide to mod it,I'd love to see that,too

Welcome, Hey he(Chrome guy)on his second build barley on his second year of street riding,The latest is called HaCk-J0b,sure ya wont to follow that. .Have some fun with for the rest of the riding season ,pick up afew parts here and there on sight or Flea-Bay,Come Fall/Winter pull her inside and go at it.
Now I'm all for Stock ......SUCKs,But my bike is stock,Well all Honda parts from A 750,few mods for safety N My touches,I could at any time put this bike back to Stock look any-time Like if I were to sell as HellBilly stated.Just have some fun and post Hella pictures.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have already learned a lot from this forum in the past two weeks from Gentlemen like Hellbilly, Shineyribs and Piute. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.
As Piute mentioned I think the plan will be to collect parts over the next few months do what I can in one or two days then do any major changes when the weather changes.
First, I need new handlebars, air cleaners and new rear shocks. The only mod that may be permanent would be grinding off the tabs that hold on the side covers. That would come after a new seat and moving the battery??
I don't like the headlight/horn all in one bracket so I will be looking at for suggestions on how to replace that and the gauge housing with more chrome. I'll be looking into hiding the wires in the handlebars if that is possible. I see braided hoses and a lot more chrome in this bikes future.
I'm in need of information on swap meets and parts places in L.A. and Orange County.

Oh and fyi to save yourself the headache, do not try to run pod air filters on your bike, they have been proven over and over again not to want to cooperate with the DOHC CB750's as the carbs are vacuum driven and need the vacuum caused by the stock air filter housing in order to run properly, but you can change the pipes without much of a hassle on these bikes, might need to rejet afterwards to compensate for the new pipes (especially for 4 into 1 exhaust systems).

Got my first set of parts and started stripping the front end down. I'll need a new speedometer in the next two days. Also the tree is ugly so I'm searching for something sexier. I have been looking through some posts/threads to see what other people have done. Here are a couple pics I took last night

Yesterday morning I removed the paint and started polishing it. I did see a polished one for sale on ebay but was not sure it was aluminum. Thanks
I decided I need new front braided brake lines and throttle cables. I think I'll have to wait and measure when the handlebars go on. Also looking for another option for the fuse cover. Black plastic wont cut it. Maybe move the fuses and just find two top clamps for the bars, but that means relocating the choke?

I stripped the bike down and have been polishing and buying parts. I picked up a seat from Nostalgia Speed and Cycle and met a new friend Steve Carpenter. (He's built a few bikes). I picked up a chrome gauge bucket and a tail light for a 41 Chevy from a Hot Rod shop in Orange County.
The seat is at an upholstery shop getting a cushion made?? I also found a metal supplier and bought a 1/8" thick sheet of aluminum. I'm going to try and fabricate a dash board/gauge mounting bracket. I'l also need to make a Lic plate holder and some brackets for the rear turn signal. Finding Stainless steel bolts for everything has been a chore. I'm looking for new brake lines and cables for the clutch and throttle. Just waiting to mount everything on the shorter bars so I can get good measurements

Moving right along! If you are looking for a stainless steel engine bolt kit, zl1 enterprises has on for around $25 and you can find them on ebay. Waaaay cheaper than piecing one together at a hardware store.

I started hammering on the gas tank today to put some knee dents. I saw a video on you tube and thought I could do it. It is not as easy as it looks. I now have a pin hole to repair. I'll put up some pics later when the whole thing looks a little better. I may have to start shopping for a new tank.
I want to use the stock pipes. I'm going to wrap them because I think it looks cool. But I want the stock mufflers to be slightly louder. What can I do to those. I have 4 to 2 pipes. The baffles have 3 screws. Can I pull them out and drill a couple holes??? Any ideas or should I just get different mufflers?? Not too loud, I'm not looking to get pulled over. My town clearly enforces the muffler laws. They put up road signs all the time reminding me.

You can shorten the baffle pipes, put more holes in it, re pack the mufflers with less fiberglass packing, or with steel wool, take the packing totally out, the list goes on. Just don't do something silly like drilling holes on the outside of the baffle or the muffler, will look funny and sound weird. All really depends on your imagination, tools, funds, and skills.
Maybe the easiest thing to do, and the easiest way to be able to return the bike back to stock would be to take some of the packing out and keep taking more out til the loudness suits you, then re-secure the baffle and ride it.

Two Speedos to choose from. My wife likes the big old Harley look. The smaller one is from an old 71 El Camino that I sold before I finished
painted the frame and a nice view of the new clubman bars and brake. I am working on a custom aluminum speedometer bracket. And I will eventually need some shorter cables
Pretty sexy tail/turn lights. I have not worked out the lic plate mount yet?? and the seat will sit about an inch higher than the pic. It's just laid on the frame for the pic.
