After checking all the valve clearances and installing a new gasket (which was a pain in the a$$) I now need to check my head nuts, is there a trick to getting the valve cover gasket to stay in the valve cover while you slide it between the frame and motor? It always comes out and then I'm left using a small flat head screw driver to push in the edges of the gasket. Are you supposed to put some gasket bonder or something?

I really don't care what kind of bike your on, I just like messin with Harley owners because they are usually so anal about the brand.

So I got the bike together enough to take her on a maiden voyage last night and noticed a few issues. The first and most important I think is to take care of the awful sound coming from the engine. I think the long cam chain. I tried adjusting it using the method described in my manual but no improvement. I have heard of cam chain tensioners locking up and of high mileage units having worn through the slide. I probably have both. Also when idling below 2000 its loud enough to make me want to hit the kill switch and open my mouth , I'm going to sync the Carbs and take out the tensioner to make sure its working ok. Question- can you replace the long front plastic cam slide without taking the head off?

Re: Check out my new ride!

The Caswell tank sealer has failed me after hardening, curing for 4 days. It's turned my gas yellow and fouled my plugs, my guess is its leeching into the gas as it is slowly being dissolved by the gas. So weak. I started a new thread on it this morning. I'm so disappointed, my bike was running at least and I even took a ride on it 2 nights ago. Now I'm left with a bad tank, fouled plugs and clogged Carbs  never again will I use Caswell. Only welding for steel tanks in my future. If anybody's ever heard of that before let me know because Caswell has not heard of it before. They say if was bad mixing it would not have hardened and mine was very, very hard. Ahhhhhhh!!! So upset. All I want to do is ride. Crap.

I wonder if you sent your tank to them and let them look at it if you could get anything resolved? Worth a phone call at least?

Re: Check out my new ride!

I did ask them that, they didnt seem to have any interest to reimburse me or even figure out why it happend. The lead tech (who I was handed off to by the answering tech) told me he's never heard of that before? I really don't believe that. He then asked me if I used BP gas? I asked what is the difference, he said it has more ethanol...so if I happen to get some gas that is higher than 10% ethanol it'll melt? No he said but BP gas will. At that point I just said look I just want you to be aware of this problem so other people don't have the same issue. He said ok, thanks. Call my extension if you want 50% off a new batch. I declined.

Ha, sounds like he doesn't give a damn and like he has heard of it before and they are aware and just don't care. I was hoping maybe you wouldn't hook the tank up til u let gas set in it for a few days and drain it out some to make sure it wouldn't do that, sorry they made such a crappy product and hopefully the damage is reversable.

Re: Check out my new ride!

Yes that's exactly my thoughts. They don't care except to sell more snake oil. I shouldn't have hooked it up till I tested it. Further more I should have done a quality control test in a tin bucket or something. Anyway I think new plugs a carb clean and a new tank will do the job. I actually just bought one on ebay from a guy who is parting out his bike. No scratches or dents in the tank and he said it currently has gas in it with no leaks, so its actually better than the one I had. Score!!! :) its a set back but I will not give up on my machine. It has lots of life left and I intend to use it! Thanks for the responses, I appreciate it. And ill post pics of the new tank when it arrives. I was so bummed yesterday, but I'm excited again! Thankfully there are a lot of good cb750 specimens out there and owners who want to sell me their parts! Yes!!!

Please forgive me for doubting you! What you said is exactly what happend to me. How did you know the gas would turn bad and ruin my carbs?  The tank liner has been dissolving in the gas after it hardened.

Re: Check out my new ride!

Well I was hoping it wouldn't but like Shiny said there have been so many horror stories about the liners that it almost seems like it's the same story everytime, and there is nothing to forgive bud! I was just trying to give you a heads up and hopefully help prevent you from making the same mistake so many others have made before, but now I bet you'll never do that again

Re: Check out my new ride!

I'm cleaning the gunk out of my carbs and trying to find the reason fuel isn't getting to the #4 carb (besides the epoxy residue ). Upon dissasembly I noticed that the slide on #2 carb has scoring on the side and doesn't slide all the way down quickly, it gets snagged 3/4way down and takes an extra second to close fully. Question is if I use 800grit or higher to fix it, should I just try to sand the scored area, or do it evenly around the slide? Also if anyone has a trick to this or experience doing it please tell me your story. Much preciated gents.
