Half-Caf: my '80 cb750f SS cafe project

Is that month up yet??
It might be a long month  Even so, if I have to eat my own words it will be well worth it.

As I said before, the more I dig into the bike, the more stuff I decide I'm going to do to it. I mentioned anodizing the rear peg brackets, but with the more research I did, I began to lean toward gun coatings.
Gun-Kote was my first thought, but at $50/can its pricey
I think I've settled on "Aluma-Hyde II" and will be using that for the rear brackets and the rims.

Also, as I was looking at what remains of my bike, I decided that it wouldn't be hard to take the engine out and paint it as well. I picked up some flat black today for that and a dolly that I will whip into an engine stand (tutorial to come!).

New tires may have to wait until the 15th, (payday) But I've also decided that now would be the best time to replace them -especially because I will be painting the rims.

As always, more to come

Also, after reading Cabreco's post, I think I'll be taking my chain off and giving it a good cleaning as well.

Ah, I get it Piute (although it did take me a second).

Shiny, I was thinking then that meant nothing else to spend money on ...then I realized that will never be the case.
I always have to have some project to keep me busy!

Re: Half-Caf: my '80 cb750f SS cafe project

So, it's been a while, but I've been busy lately (bike and otherwise).
As usual, I've been taking more and more parts off of my bike. I recently had to pile up a bunch of junk on the frame because the bike began to teeter-totter on the jackstands  I guess I'll have to take some parts off the fron to balance it out

I have parts laying all over the place

In other news, I have done quite a bit of painting lately. Here are some shots of a few parts as well as my high-tech paint booth:

I also recently decided that I want to change up the front end a bit. I ended up purchasing a near complete front end (forks, calipers, master cyl, lower triple, brake lines, and clip-ons) from a 94 CBR600 F2 for the price of a cleaner triple setup. I will still have to buy a CBR top triple, but they can be had for $10 on ebay

I have to go (at work), but there is a lot more to say, so stay tuned!

Made some more progress (I guess ) on the bike tonight. I had to upgrade to a bigger parts bin

Right now my ride is giving new meaning to the term "Naked Bike"

Hmm, something's missing...

That's better!

I wanted to mock up the new front end tonight, but the guy keeps having things "come up"  That's ok, I will continue to relentlessly hound him until I get my goods  He seems like he's legit, but sometimes people on Craigslist can be reeeaal flakey..

Re: Half-Caf: my '80 cb750f SS cafe project

As I posted in my headlight thread, I got my new e class assembly today
I didn't even bother changing out of my pajamas (or eating breakfast for that matter) before I got out the dremel and went to work. As you can see, I had a lot of work to do:

I knew when I ordered the light that I was most likely going to be using the smaller of the two lenses. I was afraid the big one would be too large and the small one too small, but it looks like it will be perfect!

Of course I wanted to use the projector lens from the larger side -nothing a little fabrication can't handle  So I slapped the plastic wheel on my dremel and got to work!

Sooo purty

Some mock-ups of the projector assembly in the lo-beam side:

As it has a projector lens, I assumed it would be fitted with HID bulbs. However, I was surprised to find it fitted with Osram 64210's in both the hi and lo lenses.

The concept of halogens with projectors is a new one for me. I guess I'll have to fire them up and see how they look.
Maybe instead of switching to HID's I'll investigate throwing some HIR's in there (Halogen Infrared Reflecting). Some good info on using these bulbs can be found here.

Re: Half-Caf: my '80 cb750f SS cafe project

I did a little more work on my light today. My goal was to sand out some scratches in the front side of the lens and remove the vertical lines on the backside as well (they weren't perfectly vertical how I wanted to mount it) Oh I also cleaned up the edge a little while I was at it.

I am still not sure whether or not I want to keep the inside all silver, or have the outer portion black.
Anyway, here is a shot of it with the primer I threw on today.

Oh, I finally got my new shocks from Mr Ribs today. This is literally how they arrived

Good thing I'm painting them or else I would have punched USPS in the face..
They must have played polo with the box for that additional 3 days after it was supposed to get here.

Your bike seems to be comming along nicely.
What do you plan to do with your old headlight and bucket? My bike is missing it.
Would you care to sell it to me? Also was wondering if you had shiped that idle mixture screw.
I picked up the tap i needed to clean up where the old one was today.
Oh i was also wondering what are you going to use to clean up that headlight now that you have sanded it.
I like the way you have your frame painted too.

Thanks for the compliments, GT.
The fuel mixture screw went out this morning -have you been getting my emails?
Also, I will be selling A LOT of parts soon, but am not ready to just yet.

As for the headlight, I will be using a lens restoration kit like this one.
The pictures above show the first two sanding stages. I'll continue moving towards finder paper and then steel wool before I use the kit.

That lens restoration kit works wonders. When I bought my truck, the lens were fogged. Bought that kit, used it, and holy cow I was blinded by the light.

Pun not intended, but since it's used....

Turbos, Hondas, 4-bangers, what could go wrong?

Well, as some of you may have seen in the DOHC horsepower thread, I am purchasing a cb900c and will be building an engine mashup out of the two.
Well, tomorrow morning I will be picking up the new bike  Needless to say I am very excited!
I can't wait to be actually putting things together instead of tearing them apart... It's sad, but I recently had to look up a picture of my bike because I actually forgot what it looked like when its together
