Oh, I forgot to mention: the carb bodies Tools send me actually looked quite a bit nicer than my originals with a quick cleaning. Due to this fact and also because I wanted to block all my air-cuts anyway, I've decided that I am just going to do a complete carb rebuild. Yes, that includes un-racking the beast

ok, I've been doing a little more rear-end work and I am quite pleased! I did a mock-up of the new tail light setup and it's looking good.
I cut out some sheet metal for the seat pan and shaped it to fit (with the help of a hammer and a 2x4).
Since I'm no welder, it's secured with a healthy amount of jb steelstik -love that stuff Also, if you look closely at the end of the frame rails, you can see that they are notched out where the corners of the tail light rest. This helps support the light and keeps the look clean and simple.
As far as the jb stuff goes, I know it's not as strong as the real deal, but the pan won't really be supporting any weight. I've decided that at least in the rear the seat will bolt directly to the frame.
We'll see how creative I get

Ahh,looks mucho good on a bigger screen If that is not gonna be holding weight you'll probably be OK. More or less just a splash pan from what it sound like. Might as well give it a shot. I would keep an eye on it.It'll probably do just fine, but if it DID come loose and get tangled up at speed....well...id just keep an eye on it.Rivets aren't a bad idea either.Just saying.
Anxious to see the rest! Is that month up yet??

Quick question for you all: how hard should it be to remove the rear axle? After taking off the special nut, can you just tap it out? I just want to make sure because it's not wanting to budge.

Sometimes they get kinda stuck. Leave the nut on and whack it with a rubber hammer. If ya aint got a rubber hammer hold that 2x4 you had earlier up to protect the threads. You shouldn't have to WAIL on it,but it could take some light to moderate tapping

I started with a mallet and then switched to a small sledge. Its only moved about an 8th inch.
Just wanted to make sure that there's nothing else I need to take off before popping that out.

Update: Painted tank decal; removed wheels; rear axel finally out; rear splash painted; front fender prepped; and discs are off and possibly being drilled tomorrow.
I'll get some pics up tomorrow. Right now its almost 4am and time for me to get some sleep.

When I finally got it out, the one end of it was rusted pretty bad. I think the bracket that holds the disc on there was rusted in place. Also, after a while I noticed that bracket separating from the hub but still in place. That caused the axel to bind rather than slide out. A little blaster and the rubber and some encouragement from the rubber handle of my hammer did the trick.

Good job. I would suggest putting some anti-seize compound on it when, you reinstall it.

Are you drilling the discs yourself or did you find someone to do it. I've been wanting to do that myself.Ive heard it helps reduce brake noise.

It's actually a little of both. A guy I know has a machine shop and told me he will help me draw them up in cad and give me a few pointers so I can have at it. I initially offered it to him as a job, but I like this option even better! So I will be going the cnc route with them and then resurfacing and chamfering the holes.
Didn't get to this today as I wasn't sure if he would be working this weekend. But perhaps next weekend

I promised you guys some photos, so here they are!
First, a shot of my bike in its current state:
As you can tell, I have it pretty stripped down at this point. The more I get into it, the more things I find myself wanting to do. Last thing I did today was remove the swingarm because I decided it could use a new look. I would also love to anodize the rear peg brackets, but I have no idea how much that would cost.
In other news, I painted a pretty sweet star on my gas tank. I made it using some painters tape and a razor blade -I'm pretty proud of myself, too I took some pictures of the progress:
TaDa!
I also made up a set of side covers today out of diamond plate. These will also be primed and painted to match the tank.
Can you tell what I used as a template? One other thing I will include from my productive day is a shot of a stand I made out of a 2x6 laying around.
It works pretty well with a couple of jack stands in the front.
That's it for now, but you can be sure there will be more soon

AND THE SIDE COVERS! HOLY COW.
