Just picking on ya. Triple posts are fun to read. Kinda like a self induced deja-vu. You dont get to experience that too often! Really drives the point home, too.

This post was updated on .
I got my clutch and springs, but completely forgot about the gasket. Do I need it or can I just use high temp rtv?? Would rather use rtv so I won't have to wait on parts.

Thoughts??

EDIT: Finally got a email about the sprockets. They just go shipped out today. So that will have to wait until next week.

Unless the gasket ripped I would try to reuse it. A lot of people might call that bad advice, and that is OK,but I have reused the gaskets on my many of the side covers on my bike with zero problems. RTV is not a real good idea, I know you dont want to hear that. Little balls of it can fall of and plug up areas that you dont want plugged. I have a SOHC now I'm working on that has RTV on every gasket surface.I dropped the oil pan and , as expected, the pickup screen for the oil pump is covered in little balls of RTV.

I hate to burst your bubble, but I would really hate it even more if I didn't tell you this.

Dont forget to soak your new clutch corks in oil.

One more thing. The steel plates in your clutch pack have a direction to them. When you have it apart feel around on the edges of them. One side of the steels will be smooth and sorta rounded off on the edges, the other side will be sharp and have a defined square edge. It doesnt matter which way they go in ( rounded edge in or out) just as long as they all point the same direction. If you mix and match them it can make your clutch fell springy and mushy.

Also, take a piece of Scotch Brite and clean up the steels. Nothing major, just knock the sheen off.

Yep, gasket broke. and I must have skimmed over the part about using a special tool to get that nut off. So I ordered that stuff and it should be here tuesday.

Got my gasket and clutch tool, and the sprockets.Ive already taken the rear tire off, still need to cut the chain off. f'ed up axle nut because I don't own a mallet and used a hammer. Big $21 mistake! (Have since bought a mallet)

Hoping that the bike will be back together Thursday.

How long does the friction plates need to sit in oil before installing?

I've been told that overnight is good for soaking the plates. So I'd say at least5 or 6 hours????

Re: my "new" 81 cb750k

Problem! Putting my new chain on I found out it was to long. After specifically telling them I need 108 links. Well it was actually 114. I have put the master link on using vice grip( before I read the back of the box were it says not to use them) and have it pressed down. Well now I need to take 6 links out and no idea as to how. HELP! I want to get this bike riding tomorrow.

Also, how do you clamp the rivet Dow so it will not come out?

It takes a special tool to mushroom the head of that rivet . I would recommend getting a clip on master link. You can buy one for about $5 at most any bike shop. I just bought a new chain and forgot to specify clip style master link, rather than rivet on. I didn't even attempt it. I just went out the next day and bought a clip on.A cheap version of that tool will run you around $80+. If you bought an o-ring chain make sure you tell them you need a master link FOR an o-ring chain. The pins are longer.

Clutch go in OK?

Oh,and to remove links. I just cut the head of a rivet off with a grinder or a cut off wheel. The pin will be tight so you will have to drive it out with something. Sounds worse than it really is.

When you go to grind/cut the rivet off make sure you wrap the good part of the chain( the part you are NOT cutting off)in a rag and tape it up good. I use electrical tape because it pulls down tight and creates a good seal. That will keep your cutting debris off of your chain which will eat it up in hurry.

Wrap it up,cut it off, knock out the pin, install clip style link,adjust-you'll be riding in 20 minutes

For the chain cut, had to cut 6 links off. Going to go get the master link when they call about my other parts since it a 20mi trip.

Finishing up the clutch right now. Pretty simple, but on the pressure plate bolts, the manual just says tighten the bolts. What kind of value is that. Am I trying to compress the springs all the way down??

I dont know about the DOHC's,but that feel is normal for a SOHC bike. They never fully release. So irritating...

Where Do you make adjustments at? It also seems like its hard to get into neutral once going through the gears. But if I shut it off it will go into neutral just fine.

Sorry bud. I dont know where the adjustment is done for a DOHC bike. Have you had a chance to download the FSM for your bike yet? I'll see what I can find out.

Everything is back together and running great. No more slipping. Haven't really beat on it yet. I want to get some miles on the new clutch before I do.
