Re: 1980 CB750K Cafe Project (hopefully)

Griffin
Just had an interesting conversation with Ken from Cycle Exchange about Carbs.  Surprisingly he didn't recommend the dual carb setup for the DOHC.  He say they will work but the manifold was designed for the SOHC so there is very little room for filters.  He also said you could use the stacks but it's better to run filters. The more interesting thing is that he said there's really no performance increase in the dual carb setup on a DOHC. So in short they work if you want them and certainly look better than the CV carbs with an airbox but if you want performance you should get a set of CRs.

The Cycle=X duel carb set up will work with the DOHC, and SOHC without any clearance problems. You just use two of the stock carb boots to go between the manifold and carb instead of the straight ones that come with the kit. This way the carbs go back straight between the frame rails. However there other manifolds on the market that will work. I believe Speedmoto has them.

I was pretty bummed when he said I wouldn't get a performance gain. Great idea to use the stock boots like that. Sounds like you could get nice filters on that way. I really like the idea of a dual carb setup and it's a lot cheaper. I also like their manifold better than speedmotoco.

As for using CRs if I do shell out the cash. Do you know if my stock throttle housing, throttle cable and choke cables would work with them? Also is there any real benefit to using K&N filters over a cheaper set?

I got the rear put back together. I'm using the rear shocks from an F model of the same year, they cleaned up nice.

Lookin good.
Why did you put the rear break fluid thingy on the other frame part insteadof the original spot?

Re: 1980 CB750K Cafe Project (hopefully)

There was no original spot. The K model had a drum rear brake. I'm using parts from an F model to get disk brakes and mag wheels. My wire wheels were beyond my ability to restore. I had to modify the frame for a new rear MC and added a bolt-on point for the fluid bowl.

Re: 1980 CB750K Cafe Project (hopefully)

I put the handle bars on and I'm working on wiring up some aftermarket switches. I think I've got it figured out but I'm hoping someone can confirm. My new switch is different than stock. The turn signals have one wire in and one out to left and one to right. It matches color for color on those and I can use the diagram to track the "in" wire from the flasher and the "out" wires to the turn signals. It does not have a place for the lb/w, o/w, or br/w wires. Based on the diagram and taking apart the stock one I can see they all use to be switched. Can I connect those wires together? I believe it will still work that way. The only difference is that both sides of circuit are typically open and closed by the signal switch. If I ran one side all together only one side of the circuit would be open and closed at the switch. Will this still work correctly? Am I missing something?

I can't recall offhand the exact colors, but there are duplicate wires coming out of the stock switchgear in regards to turn signals. There will be two ''out- going'' feeds for left or right( hope that makes sense), but the duplicate was used solely for the turn signal indicators on the dash. You;ll probably have to poke around in the FSM and decipher the wiring diagram to determine which wire actually went to the blinker itself, and which wire was for the dash indicator.

Oh, and on the performance gains of different filters and such..yeah, the stock system is sorta bulky and hard to deal with come maintenance time, but they work reliably and aren't restrictive at all. Especially on a stock engine. For daily ridden reliability, you can't beat a stock Honda.

Re: 1980 CB750K Cafe Project (hopefully)

Griffin
Well I had a few moments of terror today when a cam holder bolt broke off as I was torquing it to spec.  I never expected that.  I thought an aluminum head would strip before a bolt broken. Especially under 12 ft/lbs or torque. It must have been weak already.  After a few things that didn't work, I was able to drill a hole in the bolt and tap a small screwdriver in to unscrew it.  Now there is one stainless steel bolt that doesn't match the others.  That's going to bug me for a while but it was better than ordering one and waiting for it to come it.

Another problem was that I couldn't remember exactly how the oil pool caps went in.  I think they point up and sort of come around the cam shaft holders in the center on the intake side.  The shop manual doesn't have a good pic but that's the only thing that makes sense.  It puts one edge pretty close to the cam lobe on either side.  If I've got it wrong please correct me.

I'm painting the cam cover now so it won't go on until tomorrow.  That should complete the engine to the point where I can put it back in the frame.

Re: 1980 CB750K Cafe Project (hopefully)

Griffin
The Motor is back in and I got the chain installed.  Had a heck of a time with the chain. I thought I could separate it with a chain breaker but I ended up breaking the chain breaker instead of the chain.  That is one tough chain!  After getting a new chain breaker under warranty I took a grinder to the chain before using the chain breaker and that worked well.

Here is my remaining to do list.

Torque the drive sprocket bolt
Torque the swing arm nut and motor mounts
Install the Brakes
Install Wiring Harness (get all the stuff to fit under the seat)
Cut out a place for the electronic components from the seat mounting board
Test electrical make sure I wired it all correctly and fix whatever I screwed up
Install Exhaust
Install Spark plugs
Install Carbs (on order)
Install Headlight (getting painted)
Install Tank (getting painted)
Install Seat (getting painted)
Install Fender (getting painted)
Make a seat pad and install it

I think that's it
