I think there should be a big rubber doughnut, or something like it there.

Any ideas where I can get one, or is it fine if it's missing? It's one of a lot of things that I should have noticed during purchasing.

Use a fender washer, and some rubber to make one up.

You can buy big thick rubber washers at your hardware store. A nylon one will work as well. Wont absorb as much vibration though.

I have to go to the hardware store anyways to replace 2 bolts which the previous owner did wrong. So I'll grab a couple fender washers, rubber, 4 new bolts, and be on my way.

If I'm lucky, my brake rebuild kit will be there as well. Then I can put the seat back together, the brakes together, and send 'er on her way. With my ass on the top. :D

This site rocks. Seriously.

Mine actually has a piece of rubber underneath shapped like the end of the tongue with a hole in it to let the bolt through, then there is a rubber washer on the top of tongue with a washer to hold everything down with a bolt through it, can take a pic tomorrow if you need one

Re: 1981 CB750K - Repair/Tune-up

Thanks guys!

I ended up making something work. I went to the hardware, picked up 2 fender washers and a rubber grommet, then put it in. Realized the tank wasn't as high as the post, and I got creative. I cut some caps from spray bottles (WD-40 type bottles) and made a type of riser that went over the post. Then put the fender mount/rubber grommet combo on, and she holds!

Getting the seat on, though, was a significant PITA. I put a set of bags on it, and I think the leather strap was preventing the seat from going all the way down. Took a heck of a lot of work to get it down.

Just waiting on that damn brake rebuild kit and I'm good to go!

Re: 1981 CB750K - Repair/Tune-up

So, I got the brake rebuild kit today. The inside seal is SLIGTLY larger than the piston. I put the seal into the caliper, and I was able to push the piston all the way down by hand - and with no brake fluid on it to boot.

Is this normal? I can't see how it is.

Also, one of the gaskets on the left side of the motor is leaking. Is there a special way of putting those gaskets on that makes sure they don't leak? A specific bolt pattern or something? Both gaskets are new. I haven't even ridden it yet. :/

As long as there is slight pressure on the seal, it should be fine. For the gasket, I use Gorilla snot on the cover side of the gasket, and nothing on the case side.

Will it be fine to do that now that the seal's been compromised? Or will I need new gaskets?

They're a week old at best. Has been run for maybe 5, 10 minutes tops.

My caliper o ring was not real tight either. Sounds about like mine was. For sealant I only use permatex. Ultra black silicons. Never fails.

Hmm. So I took it for a quick ride - never been off my side street yet as my dad hasn't gone out with me yet. So I only go up and down my immediate road.

At 6k it starts struggling to climb in rpms. By the time it hits 7, 7.5k it really doesn't want to go any further. I'm thinking this is due to carbs or the compression. Doesn't have the power to climb.

Also found out my neighbors suck. Aside from the one time when I was in a stretch where nobody was, I kept it at 25 - 30 mph. Yet some guy decided to come out and tell me my motorcycle is unsafe to the kids playing outside. When I let him know that I was only doing 25 - 30 mph, the speed limit, he just responded that if I wanted to talk tough, get off the bike and back it up. I'm good, he had 3, 4 buddies standing with him outside.

Whatever happened to being neighborly? If I was doing high-speed runs around the kids, then sure talk to me. But there were no kids in a 1/4 mile area, and I didn't go above 40 mph. But the first time I went around, I saw their kid walk over to their house. Me thinks they don't like motorcycles and are bitching that I'm riding one.

In other news, brakes still feel kind of soft. Probably still has air in 'em. And I still need to figure out what I'm going to do with regards to the gasket. I'm not a fan of leaking anything.

I've got both that same stuff - black permatex - and grey Hondabond. I'll probably remove it and go with the Hondabond then, since it's made for Honda. I've read reviews of the 2 and apparently the Hondabond is a bit stronger.

Haha, probably.

I'll figure it out. Just wish I could take it out on the roads, find out what it's like to ride at speeds in excess of 30 mph!

Hoping Monday I can, after work. As long as it doesn't rain. :/

Gorilla snot = Yellow weatherstrip adhesive. I was taught to use it when I was a kid working as a mechanic at a FORD dealership. When, you use silicone it will allow, or cause the gasket to be slippery, and it can move on, you.
