Oh boy! I was not expecting that at all !Laughing so hard right now! But wait, where's the dryer vent?!?! I have always been a big fan of black and red together. I didn't think it would work on this, though. But you may be on to something. I'm reeeeally digging the red line on the wheels That might very well be the cure for plain ol' comstars! I'm kinda tired of blacked out comstars. Thanks bud.You got some gears turning for sure....
Sorry boss, forgot the dryer vent hoodscoop this time... That's what I meant by doing a red pinstripe around the edge of the rim. I didn't forget to put you on the bike with flames coming off the back
Looks just like me. Furrowed eyebrows and all! I dig the red stripes for sure. I'm not sold on the mini-apes and forward controls just yet
Let's see. I made the oil line adapter today. The lines will tuck away nicely behind the motor mount. I considered speed-holing the mount, but wasn't sure how much stress is applied to that area. I did speed hole the oil adapter. I tried to make a rotating arrangement of holes, which worked, then i got greedy and added a center hole and cluttered up the whole look of itDang.
This took me a while. I kept tapping until I got the fittings to protrude thru just the right amount to correctly locate the o-rings,yet they don't bottom out on the case.
I really wanted the rear m/c to be hidden behind the side cover, but with the oil tank and the battery I was smack outta room. I don't guess it looks too bad exposed, just not what I had in mindYa win some,ya lose some...I opted for a windowed bracket rather than speed holes. Figured it looked more open this way.Lesson for the day:drilling holes is way easier than filing windows. I so wish I had a mill.
Rear brake rod worked out easy enough. It looks like the s-arm will smack it,but it clears. Cameras do funky things sometimes.
Wow. It doesn't take much to entertain you, huh?JK.
I havent done much lately. I have been getting all the hand controls and bars sorted out. The m/c,clutch perch, levers and switch housings are powder coated and put back together. No pics
I do have a pic of the foot controls. I heated the drilled tubes with the torch until they colored to where I wanted them then powder coated them clear. I like the gold color ,too bad nothing else on the bike will match them. This got me considering making new bars outta bare chromoly heated to match.....maybe,who knows.
You sure about that man? Seems I run most of it through you before I do it
Thanks Piute. I kinda dig the burnt look too. I wish I could do that on the engine cases, but the AL dont work like steel. I have also considered torching the whole frame for the burnt gold color. I dunno. It would be cool, but not sure I could keep it uniform on that big of a piece.
I was all happy thinking I had my oil tank done, but I just remembered I need mounting tabs Pressure tested it and no leaks-yay!-now to give it a good flushing. My aluminum welding sure ain't the prettiest
Made some handlebar mounts and got the top clamp drilled tonight. The clamp bases are pretty basic, but I think they'll dress up ok later on.
Your aluminum welding looks better than mine... Pro's make TIG look so damn easy but when you try it yourself it is SOOOO much trickier than steel.
Now about those handlebar mounts. Where did you get that idea? ... pretty slick. Seeing those I wonder if a fella could use two sets of top clamps and flip one set over to use as the lower pair. Might have to machine them flat or concave to match the triple, but still have a nice starting point for a mini-riser.

Well, the original idea was like you said-use two pair and flip one pair over, flattening the bottom. But I only had one pair. So,I broke out the hole saw and bits. :) I actually got the idea from the guys over at customfighters.com. They are all about running bars on bikes that came with clipons. It's the whole ''grass is greener'' thing I suppose. The actually buy risers when they do it,though. I'm too cheap for that.
And YES! TIG'ing AL is not nearly as easy as it looks. It's easy to make it strong, but oh so hard to make it smooth and uniform. Thank for getting my back on that one.haha
I cut down a small block Chevy dipstick and got it worked into place where it'll be behind the side cover.
The second oil tank is more or less just a breather. The threaded hole will be the oil fill hole. The breather next to it is a fuel filter robbed from the race car stash All that is left now is to run all the oil and vent lines. So glad this part is done....
I'm jealous of this build; wish I had the smarts and abilities to do this sorta thing!
Turbos, Hondas, 4-bangers, what could go wrong?
Shiny: [...] Considering the weather you've had to put up with I'd say you get an Iron Butt award and a Frozen Nipple trophy to go along with it. First time I've ever posted the word nipple... it ends here.
Graig,no doubt you could.Anybody can do anything I have done here. Not trying to be funny, but it just takes the right tools. I'm just grateful to have the tools I do. But thanks for the compliment!
And Piute,I dont have the patience necessary for a good paint job. Patience is one toll that cannot be bought for sure.
I have the rear brake done after much procrastination! All that was left was to offset the brake stay arm. I finally knocked that out tonight. I was contemplating using a different rear caliper/rotor,but in reality this one will do fine....after some drilling
Mounted a tab for the rear shock air line. You can also the the return oil line fitting make close neighbors with the s-arm Close, but clear!
I ran into a fairly irritating snag running the oil lines. The threaded adapter fittings did not fit the weld in bungs like they should. They would only screw in a few threads and stop. No way I could trust that. Plus it caused them to stick way out. The easy fix was to just whack the fittings off short and weld them on directly. It just stinks since I could have just welded them on directly the first go around If I knew this was gonna happenOh well,it's all good now
Breather tank mounted and somewhat plumbed. I was shy one fitting of finishing the oil system tonight. All the hose and fittings were extra stuff laying around so it didn't run the tab up any This oil system has been kinda fun to build, but I'll be so glad when it's all squared away.
I was gonna run a spout off the breather tank out in front of the fuel tank for the oil fill. I wasn't able to find a suitable piece of AL tubing so I was putting it off for tonight. I started taking a look at making the front axle and found that the original axle hat was still in there....it was perfect....for making another oil tank. Or at least a filler tank. The fitting I was waiting on came in today. A bung with a fitted cap. Seals with an o-ring and is a really nice piece.
To explain why the breather tank is oddly shaped and mounted crooked: The tank had to sit at this anlge to follow the contours of the underside of the tank. The back plate is angled to cock the fitting up to clear the slides at WOT. See,there is a method to my madness
When I was at the swap meet at barber a few weeks ago I picked up this new fangled R&R for $9 new in the box(seriously!). So I redid the electrics under the tank.
Time to refigure the tab. The calipers I bought for this bike are no longer being used so...
