Ha!  Love it!  You snagged yourself some Guzzi cans!

On a side note, I've been pondering for years what it would take to flip the heads around on a Guzzi, turning it into a forced ram air system... comes in the front, leaves out the back...

Those Guzzi cans are in the process of being seriously gutted/modified. It almost hurt to cut those things...almost This project has been on hold for awhile, but I hope to jump back on it in a month or so.

Well, hopefully I am back to work on this bike. I picked up a front end off a '02 GSXR and I really think it's gonna be a breeze to adapt. A simple stem swap and I should be good. The axle...well,thats another story. I mat end up running gixxer wheels. After all, they are super light.Especially compared to Comstars. We'll see how this goes. Time to dust off ol' HJ. And Hellbilly, thanks for the help on this one.I almost missed this deal when I didn't know whether to pull the trigger or not.

Previous tab                    $621

delete 81C front end           -75
add GSXR front end            140
----------------------------------
current tab                     $686

I know ya'll are probably sick of the tab. Sorry,it's really more for me. A reminder to stop spending money

Nah,I can't one up you-you're out riding while mine is still on the table! I havea set of USD's,time will tell if I ever get to rock  them or not.

Now I gotta decide if I'm gonna run CB wheels- spokes or stars- or go with a bolt on gxsr wheel. I think Kawi wheels will bolt on this front end, too. GXSR wheels are veeery pricey, but Comstars are so dang heavy. I wonder how goofy spokes would look between USD's?

Well, the USD's are on the bike. That was the easy part. The tough part is gonna be getting the brake rotors and calipers sorted out if I decide to stick with the Comstars. I could pop a GSXR wheel right on here and call it done, but I'm not sure I'd like the 17'' wheel the use on this bike. Besides,a CB oughta have CB wheels to make it a little more recognizable as what it actually is. I dunno. Haven't decided yet. Anywho....

Here we go:

CB vs GSXR. Big difference. Hard to believe the GXSR stuff is actually lighter.

Press the stem outta the GSXR lower. Make sure to support the clamp when you do this.

The GSXR stem has a lip on the bottom to keep it from pulling through.

The CB's are welded on

Grind that off.

Press that out

Now you can see what you're working with. The GSXR stem is .010'' larger than the CB stem where it presses into the lower clamp. Now,a .010'' bushing ain't quite gonna work. Something that thin would be impossible to press in. Besides, you need the stop lip at the bottom to keep it from pulling through. So weld up the register on the CB stem and turn it down. This welding took foooreeeever!!!! Slowly welded beads evenly spaced around with plenty of natural cool down time-no dunking in the water bucket!- until it was finally built up enough to turn down the register and stop lip to where it needs to be.

Here is the part where you go to your girlfriend's Dad's house and borrow his lathe. If your girlfriend's Dad does not have a lathe that you can use.....you seriously need to reconsider who you are hanging out with. I mean really-c'mon-where are your priorities?!

Press that in and ...

BAM!  a CB stem in a GSXR lower clamp

Now to do the top clamp. The register in the GSXR top clamp is .020'' larger than the CB stem it has to go on. You can't build up and turn down this because the CB bearings and bearing retainer nuts won't be able to pass over that part of the stem if you do. You either have to bush it or weld up the hole in the top yoke and have it machined to size. I don't have access to the right kind of machinery to do that( or am I willing to hire it done) so I was stuck with a bushing. But,how the heck am I gonna turn out a .020'' reducing bushing? That is only .010'' wall thickness and you would need a super precise machine to do that. Hmmmm...I know! Use a .010'' feeler gauge as a bushing! Yeah,I know. I kinda went redneck on this part, but by George it works! No real pressure on this area anyways. It just needs to be located center of the stem which I think the feeler gauge will do just fine.

And there we are. A GXSR front end on a CB in just under 3 hours start to finish.

I picked up this fender at the swap meet last weekend for $15. I think it's off an early 80's Honda. Not sure really, but I dig the little wing on the back.

Previous tab            $686
front fender                15
----------------------------
current tab              $701

Now to work on new steering stops and handle bar mounts...

Yeah, I almost hated to tell on myself with the feeler gauge deal. Oh well. Maybe it'll help somebody else out some day. What I shoulda done is trimmed the ends off and acted like I machined a fancy little spacer

You know, I bet winding rotors wouldn't be all that hard. As long as you used the correct gauge wire and number of rotations. Sourcing the correct shellac and knowing how to apply it would be the key to it. Id say its definitely doable.

But, naaaah. No robots here, just a bunch of cobbled together second hand parts that will hopefully be a functioning engine sickle some day. ;)
