Wow. That DOHC head makes my SOHC junk look like farm equipment!

This post was updated on .
Thanks for the reminder! I got carried away with that cotterpin I forgot to updat about the head.
I went out that next morning and installed the rear (intake) cam, rotated it through a couple cycles and doubted myself on the timing marks locations, looked a little high. So I too it back apart, moved the chain one tooth on the front (exhaust) cam and it was noticable too low. Wound up putting everything back the way it was the first time.
One of the dowl pins that locate the cam holders was missing so I have it on order, then I can torque them all down and move on.
I saw a bucket of walnut shell blasting media at the local tool supply store, so I am building myself a DIY blasting cabinet out of a large storage tote, some plexiglass, long chemicle gloves, and PVC pipe fittings. Going to try that route on the valve cover and engine side covers instead of the sanding to remove the clearcoat / corrosion before I can polish them up on the buffer.
Something along these lines from google images...

Stretch some cling wrap around that plexiglass so the blasting material doesn't etch up your window.
Good idea man! I dig it!

Better than that, my old employer bought a new sand blasting cabinet and we put a regular air blow gun inside to use as a dust filter cleaning station. I got all the good stuff from it, sand blast gun, pick up hose, roll of adhiesive backed sealing foam, and a stack of clear tear-off's to protect my plexi. All I didn't get was the cabinet.

No earth shaking updates, just more cleaning and sorting. I did get my new headlight retainer ring from speedmotoco.com. Seems the PO had some sort of issue and even though the stock bucket was in nice shape. He had a Vetter black trim ring with the reflector wood screwed in, Duct-taped to the factory bucket. On ebay it was advertised as a direct replacement. But when it arrived I saw it was an aftermarket Emgo unit, I had my doubts...
But in the end it was not an issue, it actually fit fine. No issues and a nice fit to the factory bucket.

LOL! I am WAY past those days... surprised I lived through it at times. I did finish it yesterday enough to test it out though. After doing some research decided to go with glass beads instead of the walnut shell media. Picked up a 50# tub and started cleaning up the valve cover. I should have got a before pic to show the corrosion it already removed. I quite after a few minutes though, need to work on the lid seal. Thinking I am going to pick up a roll of adhiesive backed foam strip insulation used to seal doors and windows. Then clamp it shut with my spring clamps.

It's OK Piute, at least yours is rideable!
I got the storage tote seal relativley well and finished bead-blasting my first test piece. The valve cover has the most nooks and crannies of the covers I want to polish. That's what lead me to make this blasting cabinet, it would be a devil to strip.... so from here on out the pieces should go much easier. Here is the finished results, good clean even surface that is not nearly as rough if it would have been with sand for the media.
Also have been adding coats of epoxy to the seat pan styrofoam buck for the fiber-glassing. I'll get more detailed on that process soon.

For polishing, you should have used baking soda for the blasting medium. You are going to have a lot of work with the glass beaded surface to get it smooth.

I wondered about that TOOLS1, Hopefully bead blasting then sanding the surface texture smooth wont be as time consuming as stripping then sanding off the corrosion to get the same finish. I wasn't confident soda would remove the tuff factory clearcoat.

Piute, we shoulda known eachother in the late 70's early 80's So, honstley Mother Honda, just how many various petcocks were REALLY nessesary for a DOHC CB750?
Since I've determined my tank is in fact an '82 I discovered that year has a 20mm bung for the petcock and believe the CB750 and CB900 from that year only are the only ones that came with what I need. Probably THE most difficult to find! The one I got with my tank had a pin hole in the strainer bowl and no seals or screen... pretty rotten.
But persistance paid off and I finally found the correct one on e-bay for $25 shipped, and it arrived yesterday. A little clean-up and it appears to be a damn sight better than the one I had.
New seal and a screen and I should be good to go.

The valve cover was the hardest, many hours alternating between the Dremel to get in the nooks and crannies then my Harbor Freight buffer over the general accessable areas. For the deep fins of the oil pan the H.F. buffing wheel just fit down into so it was much easier. I also have mid sized buffers that fit into my 1/4" die grinder you can see in the pic. Compared to those, the starter cover was a piece of cake!
