Soda rips it right off, leaving the aluminum perfectly smooth. However it does not hurt chrome.

Tools is on it for soda blasting, I have used it for carb bodies in the past, but since these were larger pieces I made up the cabinet and went with glass beads.

Ahhhh. The polishing compound goes on the buffing wheel first then you hold the part up to the wheel., whether using the Dremel...

...or the Harbor Freight buffer.

Important to use sepperate wheel for the coarseness of the compounds. You don't want to put the final white on a wheel that has the coarse ebony or rouge embedded in it. I have a sepperate wheel for each compound.

This weeks "Peaks and pits"...
Bought 5 valve shims on e-bay for $4.50 a piece.
Didn't have all the sizes I needed
Seller "carted" them to save shipping from $4 each to $5 for the lot He did have
Stopped by the local Honda Dealership for the last two odd sizes I cant find on ebay where they were listed $7 a piece
Dealership Owner stepped in and said they were only $1 exchange if I brought in the one I don't use
Bottom line my "good" ebay purchase was $30 for something I could have bought today for $5!!!
I just bought this tool and it's on it's way... should be able to finish my top end Saturday

Where did you get the best deal on shims? I know I'll need some when I pit my head back on and really don't want to pay stealership prices.

junkboy66 on e-bay for $4.99 each and he added them all together to reduce shipping.
But did you get the moral of my post? The Dealership Service Department had a large divider bin full of all sizes for $1 exchange. They even had the 1/2 sizes that are so hard to find 282, 288, 292 etc. They've adjusted valves on tons of these over the years and tossed all the ones they had removed in the bins.  They let me sort through each size and get what I needed.

Ya, I'll ask again at my dealership. The last single I bought was $7, so we'll see. I've thought about buying a whole whack and then setting up a shim exchange online. There are enough of us that need these.

What sizes are you needing? I will have some left over... but they are the thicker sizes.
2.88
2.92
2.98
3.00 (x2)
3.02
3.05

I have also heard of guys taking thier old shims to a machine shop and having them thinned on a Surface Grinder to the size they need. Maybe cheaper than $7 each that the Dealership wants.

* WARNING *: Do not turn your cams with an empty bucket! A US quarter fits in place of a shim temporarily, so I bet your Canook quarter would too, maybe a Loony... That way you can take more than two out at once.

Well, heads up... that ebay seller can't read a mic! Of the 5 I bought, 3 were the wrong size!  So I wound up heading back to the Dealership today with 3 in hand and swapped them out.
BUT... I was able to get all 16 valves lash set and should be able to get the engine installed in the frame tomorrow if I can get a hand from one of the son-in-laws or daughters  boyfriends getting it off the bench

Re: '81 CB750C "Rock-It"

Hoosier Daddy
This weeks update started with a slight setback.
When I put the right and left controls on the Drag bars that I planned on using, they hit the tank unless I turned them up so high, the angle felt really awkward on my wrists.Maybe related to my K tanks mounting height on this C model frame, I dunno.
So back to e-bay I went and rolled the dice on a set of clubmans I found cheap with no pic only a description. The seller stated whe bought them from a high-end botique shop for his Triumph build only to find he needed 1" bars instead of these 7/8" bars. So they were a never installed used set. The thing that clinched it for me was the demension listed on the websight he got them from.
27-1/2" wide, 4" drop and 4-1/2" pullback.

That's less drop and pullback than the run-of-the-mill Bikemaster / Emgo clubmans, plus they are knurled which I have always prefered to the smooth centers and originally sold for $50 at bellacorse.com. So for the $19opening bid I pulled the trigger and nobody bid against me. Once recieved they are a nice fit. Plenty of clearence when turned to the steering stop and feel pretty damn good.
So, for now, I find myself returning back to my Cafe' Racer roots instead of the Street / Drag look I was going after originally. (sorry Tools)

Piute, I really dig that fairing, noticed it when you posted it earylier... cool stuff right there.

Yesterday morning the sun, moon, stars, and Wifes work schedule all aligned and I was finally able to spend some hours in the shop to get the engine back in.
Need to touch up a couple spots on the frame paint (tight fit!). I should have removed the exhaust studs first but by the time I realized it I was pretty commited at that point and didn't want to pull it back out. I had some Armaflex pipe insulation at first but it was too thick and hindered more than helped so I took it off.
Any how, now I can move forward and get on with the electricals, fabbing my exhaust, and need to continue polishing the engine side covers.

Thanks all.
Last night I touched up the frame from the engine install bugers and drilled the bars for the pins on the hand controls .... also dinked around with the seat and new carb insulators a little.
