That's probably my bad picture taking. Although you'd think if one part of the picture is distorted the rest would be. Like i said I think it would have been replaced regardless. Are those scratches on the core normal though?

I started workin on the starter clutch today. Had to go to work so didn't get to finish but here's whats going on so far.

I dont think you can see, but the three bolts that hold the mechanism together were about 3 threads out.

There's a small tab that fits into the main part... gotta remember that.

Heres the new spring!! Got it in a 6 pack from ace. I'll get the size and everything for you DOHC guys in a bit. there a bit stiffer than the old ones, but roughly the same length.

I'm replacing these because my bike would whirl and make a terrible knocking sound when the starter would slip.

Cool, I recently did this on my build. I ordered springs from Honda. I figured why not because they were pretty cheap.

Note that you may need to redo your timing when you put it back together.

All nice and snug

So here's the problem doing it this way... The guy who posted something about this on the cb750c website says "make sure this does not happen." But doesn't explain why you shouldnt... Heres why The starter gear needs to sit in that space where the rollers are going. Thats why theres a bit of resistance when pulling this out. So, you need to first put the starter gear on the mechanism THEN put the rollers in... coulda saved me about 5-10 min if i knew this. Hope it helps you guys.

Things left before she starts up again:
Bleed front brakes(Replaced stock lines with steel)
Replace headlight bucket
Clean tank/coat
Put carbies back on
Air box back on
attach cables

Hey, Johnnylevi, good post here.  When  I started up my 81c a few weeks ago I got the same whirl, knock, spinning.  When it warms up this is the first  thing I have to tackle, before my starter mech. lets go completely.   I'll have to read up on the timing.    EZ

Before you open it up you can scribe a line so when you put it back together you won't have to re time it.

thanks for the heads up, good response  time of 1 minute.  You must have your blackberry holstered and set to cb 750's but I  won't tell.   The bike is all tarped in again but next warm up I have to get to work.  6 more weeks of winter according to the groundhog.

Hey all, I've been working on cleaning out the tank. Got it soaking in some evaporust right now. Do i absolutely have to use the metal ready stuff from por-15? I have the paint to coat the inside ( por-15). I found something at O'Reily that says it leaves a protective primer for paint. here it is, but its not the Gel its just normal liquid. Can't seem to find it online anywhere.

If your tank is not leaking, don't coat it!!!!! And if it is leaking, fix it, or replace it!!!!!

Why shouldn't I coat it? ( just curious) Won't the rust come back if I don't?

I would be more worried about the coating failing (which it does more often then not) and causing severe damage to the rest of the fuel system then some rust getting into a fuel filter. Also the gas today has "ethanol" which will keep the tank clean (in some cases too clean.)

ah alright. Good to know. I thought the por-15 was pretty much fail proof if you did it right, BUT if it saves me a step, 96 hours and is possibly better in the long run, forget it.

so the tank is clean. I put gas in it today and my petcock started to leak... about a drop a second from the piece thats riveted to the front with the On/off/res position... so I took it off and put a rubber plug on. Today was supposed to be the day! man. Oh well. I've got a new one on the way from vintage.
